Microsoft has the philosophy that they are software maker, no hardware maker (Steve Balmer has dst this year against 2,500 MVPs and a lot of press reported). I also think that they would throw their windows in the handheld vendors because Microsoft would suddenly be a competitor.

RIM is currently both hardware and software competitor to MS (the Blackberry OS has its own very successful). And how can you better get rid of your competitor by buying him.
Purpose of a takeover could mean the current line of successful RIM continue. |

If they have a design like how not to, then they must look to RIM. But they do not buy, since all the material already at hand.
